There is no official method of auto-updating the DD-WRT firmware. It would contradict with all the safety precautions suggested by the DD-WRT team because, if not followed correctly, might end up in a bricked router.

So I decided to go to dd-wrt.com and downloaded their firmware for my wrt54g v2. shorted out the pins to produce a ping from the router, tftp'd the dd-wrt firmware and wahlah, the firmware was accepted and I finally unbricked my router.. I have DD-WRT v24-sp2 (08/07/10) mini, and I am trying to upgrade it to dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_hotspot.bin. Every time I have received the message "Upgrade Failed", and I can't figure out what's wrong, because this release supports this I've just recently flashed a new router (D-Link DIR-632) with dd-wrt ( v24-sp2 build 21286). I'm attempting to get DDNS set up directly with OpenDNS to keep my ip updated. My settings are as follow dd-wrt 3.10-4.4x are all a part of dd-wrt 3.x iirc. i only made up 4.9 because it's quite a bit different from 4.4 and thus the version needed to reflect the effort required to bridge much of the code for 4.9 (for RT2880/RALINK/MIPS stuff, at least).
Nov 17, 2017 · Updating to the dd-wrt firmware include risks such as: (a) voiding your router warranty, (b) limited support, as the firmware is third-party, (c) bugs in the firmware, (d) bricking the router due to a bad flash, and (e) losing certain functionality (my WPS buttons don't work after the dd-wrt flash).
